How to Get Started with Paleo

The goal of this blog is to share my knowledge and passion for the Paleo way of eating. It has changed my life in ways I never thought it would (I am going to post my whole story in one of the upcoming posts).  Specifically I want to reach college students around the world, share the information, aid them in adapting the lifestyle as a college student, and encourage them along the way. Over the next few years I will be posting everything from recipes, to workouts, to research articles, to how to handle life as a college/ grad student. While I could attempt to spew all the information I have accumulated over the years I wanted my first post to provide you all with a list of resources to help you get started and begin to educate yourself outside of my own site.

The Current Experts on Paleo Nutrition

  • Robb Wolf is a former research biochemist. He is the author of the New York Times Best Seller “The Paleo Solution –  The Original Human Diet”. Aside from his academic background he is also a Strength and Conditioning Coach, and a California State Power-lifting Champion.  His website is an incredible resource for all things paleo. He and Greg Everett, Owner of Catalyst Athletics and Co-founder of The Performance Menu, have an incredible podcast that is an invaluable resource for both information and entertainment.
  • Loren Cordain, Ph.D. is a professor at Colorado State University. He is the author of “The Paleo Diet” and a pioneer in the field of Paleolithic Nutrition. More information on Dr. Cordain can be found at
  • William Davis, MD.   is the author of “Wheat Belly”. He is a practicing cardiologist of preventive cardiology in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is also the Medical Director and founder of the Track Your Plaque program for heart disease prevention and reversal.
  • Mark Sisson is the author of the Primal Blueprint. Mark is a life-long athlete and was a world class endurance athlete. His book takes a lifestyle approach to paleolithic nutrition and how to live a healthier life.  His website
  • S. Boyd Eaton M.D. , perhaps the father of “Paleo”. He has been a  “Paleo” practitioner since the late 1970’s and is the author of “The Paleolithic Prescription”.
  • Matt Lalonde AKA “The Kraken” is a Ph.D. organic chemist from Harvard.  Matt is a force, plan and simple.  He brings an astute, clear minded view on  paleolithic nutrition.  His scientific rigor, passion, and ability to address issues with integrity is an asset to the Paleo community.
  • Kris Kresser, Chris Masterjohn, Stephan Guyenet, and Alessio Fasano are a few more big names who do amazine work in the field

The amount of reading material out there is immense, and quite frankly, overwhelming.  However, there are a few great places to start and get your feet wet.

  • The Paleo Solution – The Original Human Diet by Robb Wolf  Robb does a masterful job of conveying the entire scope of Paleolithic nutrition.  His writing is concise, informative, and entertaining.  He gives you the information in layman’s terms while providing you the opportunity to geek out if you want. There are not many authors who can make you laugh while discussing topics such as Glucagon, Leptin, and Docosahexaenoic Acid. In fact he even invites you to have a drink with him (paleo drinks of course!)

  • The Primal Blueprint by Mark Sisson Mark hits a home run in his book. He sets you straight on all things nutrition but also addresses a bigger issue, how to improve your entire life through having more fun.

  • The Paleo Diet by Loren Cordain Cordain lays it all on the line. While his book is not quite as approachable as Robb’s it is incredibly informative and packed full of great information.

Food Resources

Knowing what you should eat is only half the battle, the other half is figuring out how to make it taste good.  There are tons of great sites out there to go to for great recipes, but if you are like me and want a little entertainment and education to go with a recipe check these two sites out.

  • Juli Bauer has been running this site for a few years and her content gets better everyday. Her recipes are incredible ( The spanish chicken and cauliflower rice is to die for, seriously I made it everyday for a week) and her sense of humor is hilarious. She will have you laughing and salivating at the same time.
  • Megan and Brandon Keatley are a force in the kitchen. I have been making meals from their website for a few years and always come back for more.  They also have excellent articles to educate you on everything from stocking your pantry, eating paleo while traveling, to their life experiences.

Both of these sites also has great apparel for sale ( I have bought t-shirts from both of them and can’t wear them often enough!)

I hope this is a good start for you all and I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge, passion, and experiences with you!  If you ever have questions shoot me an email, drop a comment, or contact me via facebook, I would love to hear your feedback!
